About the FLTRP Cup

The FLTRP Cup is the oldest, largest and most prestigious English language debating competition in China. The tournament is conducted in English, and is open only to Chinese university students. The tournament attracts the best and brightest students from over 100 universities from around China. Competitors from the FLTRP Cup have gone on to participate in the major regional and international events, including the Asian University Debating Championships, the Australasian Debating Championships and the World Universities Debating Championships.
Founded in 1979 by Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) is a university press focused on foreign language publishing. Boasting the most variety of foreign languages in its publications, FLTRP has established itself as one of the largest foreign language publishers in China.
The “FLTRP CUP” National English Debating Competition is the only nationwide English debating event. Inaugurated in 1997, the Competition is organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and co-organized by the International Debate Education Association, coordinated by the English Speaking Union and the China English Language Education Association.
Steven Johnson has served as the Chief Adjudicator for the FLTRP Cup since 2003. He has been instrumental in connecting the FLTRP Cup to international debating and will oversee the inaugural FLTRP Cup held in the BP style. Steven is an Associate Professor at the University of Alaska and is very active in international debating, including serving as the Secretary for the World Universities Debating Council. |
